MO Dept of Conservation says it's great time to plant trees

The Missouri Department of Conservation reminds residents that this time of year is a great time to plant trees.

The milder temperatures, frequent rainfall, and reduced daylight hour conditions are good for newly planted trees to establish a root system. Joe Jerek, Statewide News Services coordinator for MDC, says it's best to choose native species when planing trees.

"The Department of Conservation encourages folks to plant native species or kinds of trees.  They really work better in the state of Missouri because they are acclimated to our climate, some pests and other things.  And the Department of Conservation has the State Forest Nursery which provides low-cost native trees and shrubs.  Folks can order those now through April."

Jerek also says tree care will depend on the type of soil it is planted in.

"Also, mulch is a tree's best friend, so be sure to mulch around the tree but not up to the trunk.  And most trees don't really need fertilizer so before you fertilize, get your soil tested and see what you need."
